FAQS
1. What does my student need to be able to do in order to make the team?
Students are evaluated on - Spiriting, Tumbling, Jump Technique, Motions, Cheer/Dance knowledge and precision. All material is taught during the Tryout Clinic prior to tryouts.
2. When are tryouts?
6th and 7th graders tryout in the Spring for the following school year. March 25-27 Tryout Clinic. Tryouts are March 28 after school.
3. Do you have to have your splits?
No
4. How many make the team?
The team consists of a total of between 16 and 20 students. It is a combined team of 7th and 8th graders. The top 16 - 20 students with the highest score make the team. The number of cheerleaders that make the team depends on a natural break potentially within the 16-20, or up to 20 maximum.
5. Who chooses who is on the team? Will there be judges?
There is a panel of judges that are from across Texas, and are UCA, NCA or collegiately trained or Cheer Coaches themselves. There are also teacher recommendations that play a big role in determining the team.
6. Can I play a sport and be a cheerleader?
Yes, but you may miss out on Cheering while your sport is in season. Non-DSISD extracurricular activities such as club and All-Star are considered unexcused absences. There is a minimum of unexcused absences for the DSMS Cheer Team.
7. Do I have to be at the information meeting in order to try out?
Yes, these meetings are MANDATORY. You must be at ONE of the meetings in order to receive your required forms. Required forms will not be handed out to students who are not in attendance at one of the Parent Info Meetings.
8. Is this the only information meeting? Is there going to be another one if I can't make it?
Only TWO informational meetings will be scheduled. There will NOT be any additional tryout information meetings.
